Hamburg is not just a port city in Germany. Due to the fact that it is one of the federal states of the country, the city has the status of a state. This is also evidenced by the full name of the city – Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg). This status has historical roots and dates back to the Middle Ages, when Hamburg was actively involved in the creation and strengthening of the Hanseatic League.


Territorially, Hamburg is located in northern Germany at the confluence of the river Elbe and the North Sea. Due to this, the city is not only the most important seaport, but also the fourth largest river port in Europe. It is also believed that Hamburg ranks first in population among non-capital cities in Europe. More than 2% of the German population lives in Hamburg.

Hamburg has many thriving industries. Among them, chemical, petroleum, electrical and some others. The city is also home to many world-famous trading companies, banks, insurance and economic organizations. Hamburg is rightly called the capital of the media in Germany. After all, Hamburg has more than 100 parks, many picturesque lakes, a large botanical garden, 17 universities and other organizations that deserve attention. Hamburg ranks first in Europe in the number of bridges, with more than 2,300 bridges in Greater Hamburg.


The city is also famous for its celebrities who lived and worked in Hamburg. Among them are the famous composers Johann Brahms and Georg Friedrich Handel, the inventor of phosphorus Henning Brand, the famous poet Friedrich Klopstock, the millionaire Solomon Heine, the famous playwright Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and many others. The famous politician Otto von Bismarck spent the last years of his life in Hamburg.
